Hours: Monday to Sunday 9am-5pm
Fort George Surf Shop was founded in 1974 by Jim Rodgers who grew up surfing the fantastic waves of the North Jetty and fell in love with Fort George Island. He decided to open his surf shop in what was the island’s post office, and was once a WWI army barracks.
Jim opened his store to meet the demand of the growing surf culture sprouting up around The Jetties, which is now known as Huguenot Park. Jim’s desire to preserve the local surf break led to him establishing a designated surfing area in Huguenot Park, which you can find south of the flats to the jetty.
Jim also grew up fishing and clamming which made him very familiar with the waters of Fort George.
Jim also introduced sit on top kayaking to the area, after wondering if there was a quicker, more convenient way to get around the island. Even now it’s still a favorite way to explore the beautiful and clean Fort George River and the surrounding coastal waters.
After giving retirement a try Jim returned to the store, reopening it in April 2015. At Fort George Surf Shop you can find new, used, and rental surfboards, kayaks, SUPs, board accessories, as well as swimwear and other beach accessories.
As you hop from island to island down the A1A or head to the island via the few remaining river ferries make sure to take in the unique coastal forests, salt marshes, and the abundance of wildlife the island has to offer.
Most importantly though, pay a visit to Fort George Surf Shop! It’s been a go-to for surfers and beach lovers for decades! No visit to Fort George is complete without it!
