Salina Cruz Surf Camp Review - Green Iguana Surf Camp

Salina Cruz Surf Camp Review

Saline Cruz is a city with one of the major ports on Mexico’s Pacific coast. There are plenty of boats coming and going from the port and lots of opportunities for fishing.

However, one of the main attractions of this city, that keep tourists coming back every year, is its world class waves.

Salina Cruz is the home of some of the best beaches for surfing in the world. As a result, plenty of different companies have set up their own facilities to accommodate an unforgettable vacation.

Salina Cruz Surf Camp Review

Surfing vacations are all about finding the right place to make you feel comfortable and welcome, without being boring and stopping you from doing your own thing.

Salina Cruz Surf Camp is one of the best places in Mexico at getting this balance right.

In this review, we’ll look at everything that makes a Salina Cruz surfing vacation so special. We’ve also examined some of the different surf camp options available in the city and we’ll outline why we think Salina Cruz Surf Camp is the best around.

Surfing

The main attraction for this destination really is the surfing experience it offers. It’s important to know, right from the get-go, that this place isn’t the most beginner friendly surf camp.

If you’ve never ridden the waves before and are looking for a place to learn from scratch, you’re probably better off looking at some of the other options.

However, if you’re an experienced surfer, or even if you have a little experience and want to improve quickly, Salina Cruz Surf Camp is the place for you.

The staff at this camp are all experienced surfers who have been riding the waves at these beaches for years.

They’ll know through intuition and experience where the best place will be for surfing each day and they can take you to the best unknown beaches that won’t be too crowded.

The staff are listed on their website as ‘surf guides’, not teachers.

This means the expectation when you arrive at the camp is that you’ll already know the basics of surfing so you won’t be wasting any of the time you’ve paid for on the sand, learning how to stand up properly.

The camp also doesn’t provide any surf boards or surfing equipment for you to hire once you’re there.

This means you will have to go through the struggles of travelling with all your gear or finding a different place nearby that will rent you some equipment for your vacation.

However, as long as you’re not a complete beginner and you can arrange getting your own equipment there, this is easily one of the best places in the world for surfing.

Not to mention, some of the world’s best surfers consistently come back to these beaches to get the most out of their time on the water.

Because the staff are all so passionate about surfing, their priority is to get you to the best spots on the beach every day and allow you to stay out on the water from sunrise to sunset if you want to.

It’s this level of freedom to surf however you want that sets this camp  apart from the competition.

Accommodation

The accommodation at Salina Cruz Surf Camp is surprisingly adequate, considering the standards of most vacation destinations at this price level.

The building itself, known as Casa El Mirador, sits in one of the tallest hills in the area and provides a dramatic 360 degree view of the beaches and the city.

The accommodation has all the amenities you’d expect, including air conditioning, free WiFi, a TV and multiple living areas to relax after a long day of surfing.

The staff do a great job of creating a family atmosphere at the accommodation. Depending on what type of package you choose for your stay, you could end up spending all day with your surf guides, so it’s really important that they’re as friendly and welcoming as they are.

The accommodation only has room for a maximum group of 5 people, so you won’t be able to stay there with a large group of people. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Because the camp caters for such small groups, it allows them to provide a high quality and personal service for everyone who stays there. The camp isn’t designed to be a hotel that people stay in just to explore the city.

The surfing experience that the staff are able to provide for smaller groups is what makes this one of the best surfing destinations in the country.

Food And Drink

Included in every surf package on offer is the promise of 3 meals per day, cooked by staff. Trust me when I tell you that you’ll be treated to some of the finest, authentic Mexican food you’ve ever tasted at Salina Cruz Surf Camp.

The ingredients are all sourced locally and the menu features plenty of traditional Mexican dishes to provide you with an authentic experience.

Meals are all arranged to fit around the surfing schedule, so there’s no need to worry about eating at certain times or being late and missing a meal.

As well as the 3 tasty meals you’ll enjoy each day, the accommodation also has its own bar so you can enjoy a hot coffee in the morning or a refreshing, cold beer after a big day of surfing.

However, if you’re interested in exploring some of the bars and restaurants in the city instead, all you have to do is let the staff know and they’ll even recommend some of their favorite spots.

Other Surf Camps

Because Salina Cruz is such a great destination for surfing vacations, there’s more than just one surf camp to choose from.

Other camps like Cocoleoco and Las Palmeras Surf Camp all have their own attractions and might even provide a better experience for beginner level surfers.

However, the overall surfing experience that Salina Cruz Surf Camp provides is one of the best, not only in Mexico, but in the world.

There’s a reason some of the top surfers in the world come to Salina Cruz and with this surf camp, you’ll understand exactly why!
