How To Kite Surf

What Is Kite Surfing?

Kite surfing is an exciting new way to get in shape or just have fun. You stand on a surfboard-like board and use a kite to pull you through the air.

The kite is attached to a control bar that you will hold as you are surfing, and that is attached to you on a harness. When you’re ready to fly, you raise the kite by pulling its strings. This causes the kite to fill with air, which makes it lift off the ground.

As the kite rises into the sky, it creates a powerful tailwind, propelling you forward.

When you want to stop flying, you let out some string. This lowers the kite’s altitude, causing it to slow down and fall back toward earth. It then glides smoothly back to land.

When you first try kite surfing, you may feel like you are going too fast. But after a few minutes, you’ll find yourself relaxing and enjoying the feeling of speed.

Why Do People Kite Surf?

People who kite surf say they love the freedom and exhilaration of riding the wind. They also enjoy the challenge of mastering this new skill.

Some people kite surf for exercise, and others just enjoy the adrenaline rush. Others practice, so they can compete in competitions around the world.

Where Can I Learn How To Kite Surf?

There are many places to learn how to kite surf. One place to start is by looking online. A simple web search will enable you to find surf schools all over the United States.

Another option is to visit one of the many kite surfing clubs in your area. These clubs usually offer lessons and equipment rentals.

What Equipment Do You Need To Kite Surf?

You’ve probably gathered from this article so far, that you need certain equipment in order to learn how to kite surf. We will be going over the essential equipment you need to get started. You are going to need a kite (duh) a board, and a harness.

Kites

First things first, you’re obviously going to need a kite. There are different kinds of kites you can use, and they come in different sizes, depending on the level of expertise, and strength of the wind.

Some kites you can choose from are:

LEI Kites (Leading Edge Inflatable Kite)

These are common kites, and they have inflatable bladders, meaning they are good for floating on the water. It will not sink if the kite were to fall back into the water, so you would be able to fly it up again without a problem.

Foil Kites

Instead of being inflatable, foil kites have air cells that open and close when air enters, enabling them to fly. However, this means that if the kite were to fall back into the water, the air cells could fill up, causing the kite to sink.

Despite this, these kites have much more power than the inflatable variety we discussed above, and they are thinner and longer in appearance.

Control Bar

A control bar is used to steer the kite. It attaches to the kite through a harness and allows you to pull on the lines to make the kite go left or right. Some kites have two bars, while others have only one.

You should always wear a helmet when learning to use a kite, even though most kites are made to withstand high winds.

Harness

You will need a harness to attach the control bar to your body. The straps are adjustable, allowing you to fit the harness to your size. This also alleviates some weight of the kite, so you are not just holding it with your bare hands.

Boards

As with kites, there are a few kinds of boards you can choose from. A twin-tip board is the most common, and it is completely symmetrical, meaning you can change direction without having to switch feet. They vary in size depending on the size of the surfer.

Directional boards are more commonly used for those who enjoy catching waves while kite surfing. These boards mean that the rider can only go in one direction at a time.

There are different sizes and varieties to choose from with directional boards, depending on the conditions and the rider’s preference.

Hydrofoil boards are similar to directional boards, but instead of having fins attached to the bottom of the board, hydrofoils have wings that allow the board to move. As you gain speed, more lift is generated, causing you to hover above the water!

Can You Jump And Fly With A Kite?

Yes! Most kites allow you to jump and fly at the same time. However, you must remember to keep the kite under control as soon as you land. Otherwise, you run the risk of crashing into something.

As you kite surf, your kite will generate power, which increases your speed. The faster the speed, the more power is being generated.

If you edge hard into the wind, and move your kite to a 90-degree angle, if there is enough power and speed, this will cause you to be lifted into the air. This is where professionals perform tricks, making them look like the coolest people on earth!

What Conditions Do You Need To Kite Surf?

In order to kite surf, you’ll need appropriate wind for your kite, and appropriate water conditions, so your board can glide along. As we mentioned earlier, the type of wind you are experiencing will determine what kind of kite you should use.

Stronger winds mean you can use a smaller kite, and vice versa.

Generally speaking, most kite surfers can get their kite up and running when there is around 12mph of wind. This will also depend on the weight of the surfer. Lighter surfers can get away with less wind, whereas heavier ones are likely to need around 15 mph of wind.

This is also dependent on the level of expertise the surfer has. Beginners would benefit from lighter winds, and people with more experience could enjoy stronger winds.

When it comes to water conditions, flat water or small waves under 2 meters are best, especially for beginners. If the waves are larger than that, then higher skills are needed in order to stay safe and not damage any of your gear.

Final Thoughts

To conclude, kite surfing is a great sport and is a lot of fun. However, it can be extremely dangerous, so the best way to learn is to either attend a kite surfing school or hire an instructor. Both options offer excellent training and are well worth the money.
